The real matter on the discussion on the L2 cache on PII is that Intel could not modify their processor architectures ever since Pentium Pro, yes, PPro with the merged technology from Digital Alpha and Cyrix 6x86.

As the architectures were not originated by Intel, they find themselves tied up by what already implemented and could hardly make the changed without degrading the performance. Thus, the only easy architecture they could change to vary the cost is the L2 cache. And, hold both hands tie to prey that HP won't delay the Merced as the way that M$ delayed Win95.
