SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 1998--Identix Inc.
(ASE:IDX), a leader worldwide in live-scan systems and biometric
identification systems, and Itasca, Ill.-based NEC Technologies Inc.
jointly announced Wednesday that NEC's LS-21 fingerprint
verification workstation, which integrates NEC's proprietary
Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) with Identix
Live-Scan technology, has been selected for a county-wide law
enforcement network by the Cook County, Ill. Sheriff's Department.
The system will also employ Identix's DocuColor mugshot booking
system, which will be the largest law enforcement use of that
technology. The award, wherein NEC will serve as prime contractor,
calls for the initial installation of more than 120 LS-21 systems at
police agencies in and around Chicago as the core of the
Department's Criminal Apprehension Booking System (CABS) and is
believed, when installed, to be largest such installation in the
nation.
The award is valued at $9 million, of which Identix's share will
be approximately $6 million.
According to John Burzinski, NEC director of Sales &
Marketing/Central Region, the NEC/Identix system was selected "for
its ability to provide identification or verification of a suspect
measurably more quickly, accurately and with the highest quality.
Proven NEC law enforcement systems are now operating in more than
30 states.
"The Department also based its decision on NEC's Q-ID software
in the LS-21 that enables the arresting officer to transmit the
suspect's given name to the AFIS and receive, within a matter of
seconds, fingerprint minutiae from up to two candidates for
automatic verification," Burzinski said.
Identix Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Randall
C. Fowler commented, "This milestone award is further evidenced of
the efficacy of our five-year strategic alliance with NEC and once
more reflects the law enforcement community's ongoing acceptance of
our respective technologies."
NEC Technologies is recognized as the industry leader in
AFIS systems, latent identifications and large (greater than one
million records) networked AFISs. Based in Washington, D.C., NEC
Technologies AFIS Division markets AFIS products for law enforcement
and jail management; commercial finger imaging products for vertical
