Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kent., said he and the Republican-majority Senate would work to confirm a Supreme Court nominee in 2020 -- an election year -- if an opening came up, CNN reported Tuesday. In early 2016, McConnell blocked the Senate confirmation of President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, claiming it was too close to a presidential election. That spot was later filled by President Donald Trump's nominee, Neil Gorsuch. On Tuesday at a Paducah Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Kentucky, McConnell was asked about his position if there was a Supreme Court opening next year. "Oh, we'd fill it," McConnell said, according to CNN. McConnell has said before that confirming conservative judges is his priority. His comment Tuesday drew outrage from some Democrats, with Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tweeting: "Senator McConnell is a hypocrite."
