Del,

Right you are. They say that aromas are the most powerful of memory enhancers. Certainly, that has been my experience. Even when I quit smoking for that six months and actually became aware of other people's smoking, I didn't find it off-putting in the least. Someone here at SI (a nonsmoker) once remarked that a whiff of cigarette smoke brought on instant nostalgia for the days when most folk did smoke.

I don't think that I really want to quit smoking completely. I would like to have better control over the frequency and amount, however. On the whole, I enjoy smoking and--knock wood--have no health problems.

A timer? To time long distane calls? That's no fun! <vbg>

I'm just beginning to catch up on all the messages over the past couple or three days. My sister and I discuss all kinds of things and exchange ideas. We disagree on just about everything but are never disagreeable. Our discussions are great sport for both of us. She is much younger than I and thus didn't spend as much time around our grandfathers as I did. Besides, in the middle to late 1960s, and before, about 70% of the population did smoke.

When I moved up here from down there, one of the first questions my sister asked me was, "How far are you from Berkeley?" Berkeley is her Mecca, and it is my unshakable belief that the woman kneels and prays several times each day, in the general direction of Berkeley. Berkeley's recent turn towards conservatism genuinely saddens her.
