angela, from one night owl to another, ( i am on the west coast ).......... i think they will get nowhere . but that assumes a just dessert ;) i agree with you...both as to the need for consolidation, as well as the growing need for specialty chip production, DSP being the ideal example. please note the following, and its reply: To: +Robert Utne (4098 ) From: +flickerful Tuesday, Jan 20 1998 5:09AM EST Reply # of 4125 from IBD today, in the long story, etc section: S.Korean Conglomerates Will Divest Subsidiaries <<Hyundai and LG groups promised to slim down and halt or delay major projects as part of an international plan to bolster the nation's economy. Few details were given on how thwy will meet the government's demand to shed businesses. Hyundai has 58 subsidiaries, LG has 54. Conglomerates have been accused of siphoning off most bank loans, smothering small businesses.>> To: +flickerful (4106 ) From: +Robert Utne Tuesday, Jan 20 1998 10:46AM EST Reply # of 4125 The once small 'noodle company' certainly needs to restructure to get back to a few core industries. Agree about the comment that the choebel are stiffling small business development in Korea and elsewhere when/where they simply 'buy' the market. The future of lucrative CE will be based on R&D/manufacturing of chips and displays. That's two areas where LG needs to continue to allocate its won. Chips and displays production account for about 85% of all TV manufacturing profit, according to one source at Zenith. Noted in a press release by VLSI today: "According to the estimates now current from Dataquest, the market for chips like the VLSI chip set will increase from 1.5 million in 1998 to more than 30 million homes around the world by 2001, counting terrestrial, cable and satellite signals." | Previous | Next | Respond | View reply to this message View SubjectMarksBookmark this Subject Return to Communications One or more words separated by spaces: Subject Titles Only Full-Text Messages with Links <Picture> Send questions and feedback to webmistress@techstocks.com To link to this reply, use the following Location: Terms of Use
