The bottom line hear is that there are actually 3 technologies
for broadband residential access: a) cable, b) x-DSL, and
c) wireless. I think that over the long run, x-DSL will
only be a transitional technology, and that the true
competition is cable versus wireless.

I competely agree. I was restricting my comments about wireless applications within an in-home intranet.

Hi Bernard, about the LMDS auctions: I'm sure you know this, but for the others, this auction has been postponed several times now (sounds like a Microsoft product rollout), and still has some dark clouds hanging overhead with lawsuits by bitter cable operators and RBOC, who can only bid on Block B (2 pieces of 75 MHz spectrum). The primary A- Block consists of 3 pieces: 850MHz from 27.5-28.35 GHz; 150MHz from 29.1 to 29.25GHz, and 150 MHz from 31.075-31.225 GHz. The spectrum is licensed into 493 Basic Trading Areas (bta'S). There's an A-Block license and a B-block license available for each BTA, which can be partitioned by frequency and geography as the license holder sees fit.
CellularVision, WebCell, US Wavelink, and Telecom Finland are among potential bidders. Also, LMDS is a factor to consider worldwide. I have info on that if anyone's interested, but most of the companies aren't US-listed, or are such huge multinationals that the LMDS impact on their top and bottom line will be mice nuts. There are technical limitations with LMDS also, but most have a work-around.
