Interesting answer!

Since I have been involved with both the hardware and software use and development of computing systems since 1961, I have found that improvements seem to come at their own chosen speed. Some come faster and are better, therefore remain, some come and ain't so great so disappear. Until 'critical mass' was met in the 1980's I didn't see any real direction. New software and hardware would appear, and just as quickly be gone. If you 'bought' into a technology that was to disappear you were just out the $$$. ( I have plenty of history in my junk piles. ) Even today, an 8088, 80186, 80286 and actually 80386, 80486 and with the advent of MMX the early Pentiums are pretty much in the dumper. Not only that with the speeds reaching the 300mhz level, a 166mhz pentium is pretty much a door stop. I guess that what I am saying is that in 10 years (or is that months) what we enjoy today as cutting edge is trashed.

MS might be as evil as the IRS but only time will really tell.
