Chinese of course are fine with WeChat because they have no choice, knowing that to express displeasure is to be curtailed or cut off. Historically, lack of privacy and surveillance lead to decreased innovation and weaker economies. Being monitored affects people. The recently revealed leak from the NSA of state developed hacker tools shows why backdoors are so dangerous. They always leak out and are deployed directly against citizens, or are used against them directly by the gov't to throttle them.
