"Why won't Mueller show up for a public hearing and answer questions? "
You can ask him that when he shows up, comrade.

"Why won't the Democrats allow the Republicans to question Mueller in public?"
They will be allowed to ask questions.

Locogringo,
Why won't Mueller show up for a public hearing and answer questions?
Why should he? This whole investigation was a sham from the start. Both sides tried to push their foregone conclusions upon the investigation.

Even Mueller's assertion that "obstruction of justice" should be decided by Congress is meaningless. OF COURSE Congress is free to pursue these charges regardless of what the investigation revealed.

The only reason why Democrats waited for Mueller's report was because they were hoping to see more than what actually came out. Their case for impeachment was weak from the start, and they know it, even though they have to cater to their rabid supporters who want to "Impeach the mothafucka!" (Even Alexandria Occasional-Cortex is trying her best to keep a stiff upper lip.)

There's nothing more for Mueller to do now, so he's GTFO of this mess. I don't blame him.
