Joel: I'm afraid that my employment background does not include the IRS. My only time in Federal employ was a reluctant stint with our Army, and a few Christmas's delivering the mail, while in college. I have dealt with the IRS extensively for 30+ years. I found the agents to be honest, and interested in finding some additional taxes. There was not much time spent on complicated matters that were not understood. The topics that come to mind were basis verification, passive losses, depletion issues, foreign tax credits, and wash sales. One must consider the outcome of one's actions, both on tax returns and in real life. Do not tell mistruths. Present all matters in the most favorable light. Don't sweat the small stuff.
