Chuck; I had an idea for a long lasting frying pan. Two barely subcritical sheets of plutonium, separated by a small gap with an adjustment screw to adjust the gap. As they get closer the reaction makes more and more heat. So you calibrate the screw in regrees, (or REM) and you have a permanent 50 pound frying pan, only like your portable neutron source, I would not want it in my kitchen.

Or the nuclear mouse trap. A pair of subcritical masses and a bait area, the mouse walks between and the water in the mouse causes a flash that self limits after the mouse/rat has vapourised. Just stay out of the basement for 25,000 years.
