64M DRAM Chip Price Rises Sharply
January 21, 1998 (SEOUL) -- The price of 64M DRAM chips rose sharply in international spot markets in the past two weeks.

According to industry watchers, ordinary EDO 64M DRAMs are trading at US$16 to US$18 in the U.S. spot market, up from US$12 to US$14 dollars two weeks ago.

These chips were US$12.57 on Jan. 8, the minimum price in the past year, but traded at US$17.81 on Jan. 16.

The price of 16M DRAMs, which rebounded to US$3 to US$4 early last week, remains unchanged.

Business sources said the recent price rebound is significant as it came for the first time since the second half of 1997.

It is too early to tell if this will be a continuing trend, the sources said. The dominant view is that the price rebound is a temporary phenomenon.

However, the rebound is expected to continue until the beginning of February, since many Asian semiconductor makers will take a couple of days off during the lunar New Year holiday in late January, leading to a reduction of their production.
