The Pathetic Joe Biden

Posted on June 6, 2019 by Steven Hayward in 2020 Presidential Election, abortion, History, Joe Biden

I suppose the headline for this entry might need to become a regular Power Line series between now and election day. It was as predictable as the sunrise that Biden’s long-time support of the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding for elective abortion, would crumple under pressure from the Abortion Absolutists who now control Democratic Party dogma. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that he crumpled so quickly. Get used to this. But I suppose that when you’re as wrinkled up as Joe is now, it is less noticeable when he crumples up under political pressure.

David Harsanyi has a terrific Twitter compilation of Biden’s long-record of support not only for the Hyde Amendment, but for restricting partial-birth abortion, and once upon a time even the Mexico City policy (first adopted by the Reagan Administration in 1984) that bans U.S. foreign aid for abortion overseas. I especially like this old quote from Slow Joe: “I don’t like the Supreme Court decision on abortion. I think it went too far. I don’t think that a woman has the sole right to say what should happen to her body.

The standard line of the media is that it is Republicans who have become extreme on abortion. It might be worth reviewing some history to show just how radicalized in abortion absolutism Democrats have become. Remember George McGovern, the candidate of “acid, amnesty, and abortion”? Actually the last item in the list is incorrect. McGovern entered the 1972 campaign season with the position that abortion was a matter that should be left to state legislatures (which is the default Republican position today), and he successfully resisted attempts at including a pro-abortion plank in the Democratic platform in 1972. He openly rejected abortion-on-demand. There must be regulating legislation, McGovern thought: “You can’t just let anybody walk in and request an abortion.”

His chief rivals for the nomination that year, Edmund Muskie and Hubert Humphrey, also both opposed abortion. “I am not for it,” said Humphrey. “It compromises the sanctity of life,” said Muskie. The Rev. Jesse Jackson had an even tougher opinion at that time, describing abortion “as too nice a word for something cold, like murder.”

Let us recall, also, that both of McGovern’s running mates (Eagleton and Shriver) were strong pro-life Roman Catholics. Think that could happen today? (McGovern also considered as a running mate Boston Mayor Kevin White, who was also pro-life.)

That was before Roe v. Wade. What about after? In 1976, Jimmy Carter met with Catholic clergy he emphasized that he opposed abortion as a matter of personal conviction, and though he didn’t support a constitutional amendment banning abortion, he said he support a “national statute” regulating abortion, whatever that meant. “I would prefer a stricter ruling” was his comment when asked about Roe v. Wade.

You can pretty much scratch any of those old liberal icons from the Democratic honor roll today.

And remember the media line—it is Republicans who have become extreme on abortion. Rinse and repeat daily. And watch Joe Biden lose Wisconsin and Pennsylvania next year.

Liberal MSNBC hosts rip Pelosi’s call to jail Trump: ‘Stuff we used to see in Pakistan’

Pelosi reportedly tells colleagues she wants Trump imprisoned, not impeached

Reaction and analysis from Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich and Democratic strategist Richard Goodstein.

Liberal MSNBC hosts Ari Melber and Chris Matthews both condemned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's recent call to lock up President Trump on Thursday -- comparing it to a rallying cry that Trump supporters have long used against Hillary Clinton.

Pelosi told senior Democrats that she would like to see Trump “in prison,” according to Politico. While MSNBC is typically in lockstep with Pelosi, Melber and Matthews didn’t agree with her reported comment.

HELL FREEZES OVER AS JIM ACOSTA, JOE SCARBOROUGH PRAISE TRUMP’S D-DAY SPEECH

Melber asked if the counter argument would become, “Is this the Democrats' version of 'lock her up?'” The MSNBC host then said “there was a judicial, legal, process,” which “did not result in an indictment, whether you like it or not,” obviously referring to the Mueller report.

"You can't just target a president and say we want to see him in prison without producing evidence"

— Alan Dershowitz

HILLARY ACTUALLY COMMITTED CRIMES - DOCUMENTED AND LISTED BY COMEY IN PUBLIC

“The next step would be, does Congress want to deal with it. If the speaker doesn’t want to go that route, she has every right to explain that,” Melber said. “But if she doesn’t want to go that route and then she is making prison-esque, jail-esque references does she risk… getting close to a 'lock her up' frame?”

“Lock her up” was famously chanted at Trump campaign rallies leading up to the 2016 election against Clinton.

Late in the day, Matthews had similar thoughts during “Hardball,” comparing Pelosi’s comments to “stuff we used to see in Pakistan.”

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews doesn’t agree with Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s reported comments about sending the president to prison.

"Now the Speaker of the House is saying ought to be in prison,” Matthews said. “Imagine that you live in some rinky-dink country out in the world that has always looked up to ours. You know, some fourth-world country, doesn't even have democracy. And here we have the leader of the opposition, saying the other guy ought to be in prison. This is the stuff we used to see in Pakistan in the old days. Defeat the guy, then hang him."

ANTI-TRUMP PRESS FAILS TO GIN UP ‘NASTY’ MARKLE, TRUMP FEUD AS PRESIDENT TAKES THE HIGH ROAD

Famed Harvard law professor and attorney Alan Dershowitz also blasted the comment.

"I have to tell you, as a liberal Democrat, I'm appalled at Nancy Pelosi. The idea of her weaponizing the criminal justice system -- and calling for the imprisonment of the president of the United States without him being charged with any crime, without him being charged with any impeachable offense -- it's just outrageous," Dershowitz said on Fox News' " The Ingraham Angle."

Politico reported that Pelosi made the remark during a meeting with other top Democrats.

"You can't just target a president and say we want to see him in prison without producing evidence," Dershowitz added.

Trump responded Thursday in an exclusive interview with Laura Ingraham calling the Democratic leader a "disgrace."

Fox News’ Victor Garcia contributed to this report.
