Dwight I think you have missed my point. In the future we will connect to the 'Net in many ways...satellite, cable, telco, wireless & what have you.

Where I live the CO is too far away and in poor condition for 56K and xDSL, but cable is right next door. I see being connected via cable at 1.5 meg before getting 56K via PAC BELL.

Now in town where both cable and phone lines are suitable to deliver xDSL I'm sure there will be competition in some areas.

Here in Calif. I've read where PAC BELL is attempting to run fiber to every connection. In the areas they succeed at doing that I think you are right and the obit should be drafted for the cable company's 'Net access.

More: Siemens, 3Com to Launch Internet Telephony at Cebit Fair

Munich, Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Siemens AG and 3Com Corp.
said they plan to launch a service at the Cebit computer and
information fair which allows telephone network operators to
offer Internet access through their existing switching systems.

By integrating Santa Clara, California-based 3Com's ''remote
access'' technology, which allows users to access Internet data
from a home office or mobile device, with Siemens' digital
electronic switching system, the service will enable phone
network operators to offer Internet services without building new
infrastructures, the companies said.

Siemens said it expects to generate 300 million deutsche
marks ($163.9 million) in sales from the service over the next
two years.

The Cebit Fair is being held in Hanover, Germany, beginning
March 19.
