One of the big differences culturally in the US versus many other countries (which we have probably noticed in your travels) is that as a group we tend to value food quantity and low cost over quality. Companies here spend a lot of time trying to make "junk" taste good so it can be mass produced and sold cheaply across the nation. There is some hopeful signs that may be shifting.

Also, Americans can afford to pay more for food if they decide to start valuing it higher than residences, automobile, cell phones, cable TV, etc...
