Rubin sees low probability of U.S. deflation

WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin on Wednesday said a cycle of falling prices, or deflation, was unlikely to occur in the United States.

''That is a very, very low probability event,'' Rubin said in response to a question following a speech at Georgetown University.

Regarding the U.S. trade deficit, the Treasury Secretary said a worsening of it can be expected because of Asia's financial troubles.

''Clearly, our trade balance is going to deteriorate for a while,'' he said.
