Steve thinks this could of some general interest:

This may be of some interest to you:

DAX performance in 1997 47.10%

one by one list:

Company %increase branch code
SAP_VZ 178.25 62
BAY_HYPO 92.76 81

DEUTBANK 77.13 81
ALLIANZV 69.7 86
LUFTHANSA 63.51 72
VIAG 58.99 1

PREUSSAG 57.08 1
RWE_ST 51.49 10
SIEMENS 48.33 61

THYSSEN 40.61 41

DEGUSSA 33.33 21
BMW_ST 27.73 42
METRO 25.05 91
KARSTADT 21.6 91
DAIMBENZ 20.65 42
LINDE 17.06 44
BASF 9.88 21
BAYER 8.79 21
DT TELEKOM 4.67 64
HOECHST -10.1 21

DAX increase 47.10% 1.1.97 - 31.12.97

The last column is the branch code (81 for banks for instance). The absolute-by-far-#1 is SAP with the dream number of 178% increase in 1997. The place 30 on the chart is firmly in the hands of Hoechst at -10.10% (!). The company is in a transition from a chemical giant into pharma concern, and it unexorably shows. And boy do they HATE their boss (im not talking stock owners...)

I summarized the table again averaged by branches (# is the number of companies in the DAX 30 from the indicated branch):

branch # percent
62 1 Computer and EDP 178.25
81 5 Banking 86.17
85 1 Re-insurance 79.60
86 1 Insurance Holdings 69.70
72 1 Transport & Communication63.51
1 2 Holdings 58.04
61 1 Electro 48.33
10 2 Power distribution and supply 45.35
41 1 Iron & Steel 40.61
42 3 Cars 35.79
44 3 Machine production 30.24
91 2 retailing &department stores 23.33
21 6 chemicals 21.15
64 1 Telecommunication 4.67

Some other highlights:

1. Banks just outperformed everybody. They have Munich Re and Allianz on their heels.
2. After a dream 96 year chemicals had a dismal year
3. Telekom will have a lot of explaining to do, after the big autumn 96 ISP hoopla. Jan 1 98 marks the end of the monopol position of the company in the German market and some pretty aggressive sharks joined the monopolist in the pool. So it will be (another) tough year for Telekom.
4. Retailers indicate the sorry state of affairs when it comes to the domestic spending - well, I would NOT go on a Xmas splurge either if I were among the 11.2 % unemployed or just on the verge of joining the crowd.

Regards ... to be continued

DJ

KDJ; RE:" Hieronymous Bosch vs William Blake "

>INTC is full of silicon, so it's androgynous...

WRONG - silicon is masculine; see Agricola's de Re Metallica for help. Mercury is androgynous. Think "Bank Stocks" (^_^)

>Have you noticed my success in timing (again)? Call me KDJ
(like K.D. Lang). K for Kontraindicating (ggg)

They say next support for DAX-30 is ~4160. We do NOT want to see DAX break the neckline at ~4050, else we be testing the DAX's 200d EMA (at around ~3850) and potential downside is 3725-3825 region.

I have updated the DAX-30 chart that I sent you with this scenario, and will send it to you after I get today's data from Reuters.
