John - <OFF TOPIC>

Where was the Left during the "Cold War"?

Not to perpetuate the discussion, but you seem to be baiting here, and I can't help myself.

During the 'Cold War', many 'leftists', such as Noam Chomsky, busied themselves with such notorious and odious tasks as trying to get the word out about the massive atrocities being committed with tacit or explicit US approval and involvement in S.E. Asia, Central America, and numerous Pacific Island countries.

Contrary to the popular assesment of the media being completely left-leaning and otherwise 'pink', only a very small number of stories were ever run in national media of any kind about these things. Why? Poor people don't count. We only like rich people. Who cares if they're murderous thugs, they've got cheap [ coffee | bananas | oranges | labor | oil | cocaine ].

We believe it is a duty and honor to serve in the armed forces and risk our life when called upon for the purpose of defending freedom and liberty around the world.

So do I. Unfortunately, I can't think of a single conflict in which the US has been involved in the last 20 or 30 years that you could characterize this way. I can think of several that you could, but we wouldn't touch.

Watch the mudslinging, John. Not all conservatives* have morals, and not all moral people are conservatives*.

*by your apparent definition of conservative

And many of us do. We believe it is a duty and honor to serve in the armed forces and risk our life when called upon for the purpose of defending freedom and liberty around the world.

This is why we are the most hated country in the world. The world hates us (even Canada) because we tell everyone what to do.

Now, I'm sure you Rush lovers would say "They're just jealous", which is the same line you give us MS Haters. I wonder why?

Mr. B

Uh, JD, you were talking about Tail Gunner Joe? I mean, me and the judge know consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds and all, but your mind is getting mighty expansive here.

Besides, as a good capitalist I would have imagined that you would believe that the Soviet Union collapsed under the weight of its grossly mismanaged economy. And that other well known leftist conspiracy, the American labor movement, was always a big backer of the cold war. I guess it's another one of those hobgoblin things.

Oh, and in passing, I can dig irony as much as the next guy, but what's this "ad hominem against the rules of SI" supposed to mean? That it's not? Very clever. It's still considered an extremely lame argumentative technique. Of course, facts are stupid things.

Cheers, Dan.

>>"I believe in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution".

And you probably believe in mom and apple pie too. <<

Hey, I believe you asked what my politics were. You seemed to doubt that many people who opposed you on this thread were in any way not-leftists. I'm just pointing out that, unlike many in the new right today who would turn the Bill of Rights on it's head for religious purposes, I take a classical conservative approach to these documents. I am a bill of rights and constitutional fundamentalist. In that arena, I take my lead from Barry Goldwater. Who, by the way, thought most of the Religious Right were trolls.

>>>"I believe that having the courage of your convictions starts with being willing to give up money as a minimum standard."

I agree. We should all give more money to good charitable causes. We should also help people to help themselves. Provide them with the tools needed to achieve personal wealth, like 'puters and 'puter education.<<<

Yeah, right. Out of the profits made on their backs? The classic robber baron's ticket to heaven.

>>>MSFT is assisting in this area.<<<

Ho, ho, ho. Is it Christmas already? Or are they just going down the same path of donating computers and software to schools to win the heart and minds, already so well trod by CDC, IBM, Sun, AT&T (Unix), and Apple. Not forgetting to pick up the tax deduction on the way, I hope.
