As one ex-CPA to another, you should know that the "pay by the end of the year ploy" only works if you do it with your withholding tax. The IRS accepts withheld taxes as having been paid over the entire calendar year, whereas estimated taxes paid in the last quarter can still incur a penalty if paid on income earned in an earlier quarter.
