Right, lot of advances the last few years. I remember rebuilding the kernel to get it to recognize a wireless adapter or ethernet card. But that was 15-20 years ago.

I use this to create a full bootable Linux installation on a USB thumbdrive

Again, to get going, I'd let the Linuxmint installer handle everything if you're installing it on a hard drive. Don't get too deep in the weeds...
