J.F. Or any other Mac user

With our recent talk about used Macs got me interested in again getting a Mac laptop to play around with. So I decided to pass down may Lenovo laptop to a grandson and get a used MacBook. So I have would like to ask what is the minimum hardware MacBook I would need to run the latest Mac OS. I am not looking for a power machine but more of a basic alternative to my Windows platform. I would use it as a media / iTunes management platform and some streaming. Also I notice a lot of used mac laptops denote non Retina display. Is buying a non retina display a mistake?

Thanks

Don
