I do hope that they haven't liberalized Nancy in the name of bringing the stories up to date and making her au courant.

Sadly, they have. Now she's 18, not 16, because sixteen-year-olds can't drive in every state. And she doesn't have a "roadster" anymore, but just a normal car. Nor does she wear "frocks". Even as a child I loved 'em for their period flavor.

Not only have they gone and ruined all that, they've also dumbed down the writing: no hard words for Today's Child! I have a friend who buys them second-hand, and last time I was in the States I read (re-read) one. The plot was rather less than gripping (though I didn't feel that way when I was 8), but it was well-written.

A few years ago there was a congress held at the University of Iowa on Nancy. Had I known in advance I'd have attended. Her influence on American women from the thirties on has been enormous.
