If Tesla hadn't thought of it how long before someone else would have?

What amazes me is how many thousands of years did we go without discovering how to use electricity? It's only 200 years ago that the Danish scientist Hans Christian Orsted discovered electromagnetic induction and made possible the whole electrical power grid we have today.The power grid here in US is credited with it's initial completion the year I was born, 1934. That was just city to city.
