TeleHub Selects Siemens / Newbridge Alliance for Nationwide Voice and Data ATM Network

Switched Voice Services to be Included in Multiservices Network
HERNDON, Virginia and BOCA RATON, Florida, Jan. 12 /CNW-PRN/ - TeleHub Network Services has selected the industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch and MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager for its nationwide asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based multiservices network. TeleHub's broadband network will be the first network optimized to deliver switched voice, data and video services over a multiservices platform.

The MainStreetXpress 36170 Switch was chosen principally because of its superior multiservices and voice service capabilities, complemented by the Siemens / Newbridge network and services management system. TeleHub's Virtual Access Services Platform (VASP), which incorporates Signaling System 7 (SS7) technology for voice, together with the Siemens / Newbridge ATM technology, will result in significant transport and switching efficiencies, which translate into savings to its end customers. TeleHub Network Services will offer switched-voice, frame relay, private line, and ATM to local exchange carriers (LECs), competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), inter-exchange carriers (IXCs) and independent telephone companies (ITCs).

''By utilizing TeleHub's unique VASP technology along with the MainStreetXpress 36170 platform's voice and data handling capabilities, modularity and scalability, we can optimize our network and cost-effectively deliver value-added features such as unbundled Mediated Access and Number Portability over a flexible ATM fabric,'' said Mike Mclaughlin, Chief Operations Officer, TeleHub Network Services.

TeleHub's unique strategy of using a flexible, broadband ATM platform to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) 14-point checklist for unbundled services on an ATM platform is a winning proposition due to the flexibility of ATM to simultaneously support high quality voice services, data traffic and Internet Protocol (IP) traffic including Internet/intranets. The FCC 14-point checklist documents the requirements operating companies must meet to enter the long distance service provider market.

''The contract award for this leading edge network demonstrates the leadership of the Siemens / Newbridge Alliance in meeting the needs of carriers for the integration of voice and other services onto a common ATM platform, as part of an overall multi-service strategy,'' stated Peter Charbonneau, President and Chief Operating Officer, Newbridge Networks. ''We are pleased with this recognition and look forward to continuing to work with TeleHub in the rollout and delivery of this powerful network.''

The TeleHub ATM network will be deployed in key centers throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Santa Clara and Washington D.C. The sites will be connected by OC-12 or DS-3 trunks. Additional cities will be added to the network in a phased network expansion over the next 12 months.

TeleHub will operate a nationwide ATM network, initially offering switched-voice services to long distance wholesale providers. It plans to offer a wide range of additional voice services as well as data services in the near future, all on an integrated ATM platform. TeleHub's key customers are LECs, including regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs), Internet service providers (ISPs), IXCs and ITCs.

Siemens Public Communication Networks Group (Munich, Germany) and Newbridge Networks (Kanata, Canada), two of the world leaders in ATM, formed a strategic networking alliance in 1996 to provide carriers worldwide with the most comprehensive and advanced ATM solution set. With this agreement, the two companies have unified their ATM product lines under the MainStreetXpress brand and assembled the industry's most extensive ATM research and development operation -- more than 2,000 engineers in six countries.
