Paul,
Re -- The softness in NA should be a major concern to Bay and us,

NA is soft throughout the industry, witness oracle, Intel (flat) and even more relevant Cabletron/3Com (its NA sales were decimated). The fact that Bay's sales held up (in the light of general industry softness and Cisco effect) speaks well for Bay's sales force.

Re -- this is the cautionary area the analysts are worried about

You give too much credit to the Analysts. They haven't a clue about what's going on.

Well, I had thought that '98 might be a year to hold BAY, but it may turn out to be a trader's year after all. You can make great money catching some of these wild swings in sentiment. Below 26 I am ready to buy more BAY but may do so by selling puts.

I don't think a slowdown in North America is new news. Everyone has been wondering how budgets will be drawn if funds are siphoned off on Y2K issues and if customers are cautious about new product intros. What amazes me is that everyone is seeing strength in Europe. I wonder if that can last.

You know, I always had these little dreams in life like going to Mardi Gras in Rio, or seeing Istanbul, or walking on the South Pole, or visiting the Galapagos. Now these are replaced by a hope that, before I die, I will get to see the running of the bulls. That is, the Cisco bulls running for their lives when their perfect company that can do no wrong finally stumbles or (egads!) says that the next quarter may be flat. I just hope I'm not in the way of that stampede.

Finally, regarding BAY laughter at analysts requesting a blueprint of revenue breakdown. Get real. This comes up at every SUNW conference call too and the CFO there tells the gents what I just said. Get real. As I commented on the SUNW thread: as a shareholder I would love to know this information. As a shareholder I will sell this company the moment it starts sharing this information.

Stand firm. We will prevail and profit.
