I am having difficulty taking the Sony HiFD seriously. Not just
because they are too late relative to the Zip installed base, and
not just because they might be price competitive. What makes me
discount HiFD is the technology. Zip drives use the Bernoulli
patented head which aerodynamically floats above but hugs the
contour of a floppy media. Hard drives also float, but the media
is on a rigid platter. Standard floppies require the head to
ride on the media where static or a single particle of smoke, for
example, can cause data loss or make the disk unreadable. These
differences cause floppies to fail very often, (as well as wear out)
and give Zips the reliability of hard drives. If HiFD is backward
compatible with 1.4 MB floppies then they are likely to ride on the
media as well.
My guess is the delay may be due to this problem.
No one is going to pay the price of a Zip drive or disks
for a 200 MB HiFD drive which can thereby mess up tons of data
with the same frequency of damage, data loss, or can't read outcomes
that are common to the old standard floppies. Backward compatibility
is this case means sticking with the high failure rate of floppies.

<<Can anyone confirm a Sony HiFD introduction delay?>>

I inquire about HiFD by the Sony official whose name was listed as the contact person when HiFD first officialy introduced. The reply of 1/15/98 I got is as follows:

Unfortunately, I don't have any new HiFD news-sorry. We are still planning on making it available on late Q2/early Q3 98.
