I'm a Linux novice, but taking time to choose the sound & graphics hardware can avoid headaches.

The less a person knows about Linux the more important that is.

It took me 3 days to get my sound working.

Others here are more knowledgeable about Linux than I am.

I think the only painless way to use Linux is as a virtual machine in a Windows host. Windows takes care of all the drivers. Unless you want to do Linux gaming, then that is not a option.
