Agree. We have many examples of nations with relatively strong militaries - and even with nuclear weapons - and lousy economies and currencies. Russia/former USSR... Pakistan, North Korea. Iranian regime seems to be willing to sacrifice and risk everything in order to become a “great power”.

OTOH, Iceland, which spends on Defence 0.1% of their GDP (which is probably close to $55K per capita) is a free, comfy nation. Actually, in their case the GDP probably underestimates their real wealth, since about 90% of their energy needs are supplied by their abundant geothermal sources.
