There is no question about the current possibility of niche markets being served by DSL alone. It's better in delivered cost vis-a-vis satellite or other non-waveguide transmission techniques. Those niche markets could be substantial because they are captured. But who says a telephone booth can't be wired for cable? The DSL solutions would not be in place long enough to recapture their total cost.

It isn't in place, but if the dough was there and if laptops or other specialized stations needed complex data type transmission or video, you'd find cable ubiquitous and would be installed by the RBOCs. They have r.o.w. power and if they just got off their duffs, they could own co-strung cable of higher quality and go after the business market and leave the squabble over two cents to DSL and TCI. Eventually they'll figure this out. They haven't done it yet.
