What's sizzling in the Pharmaceutical and Health Care sectors? Best performers (besides FRX) reporting their earnings in the next three weeks are...

January 27: ESCMF
January 28: CNTO,
January 30: VVUS, QTRN, MEDI
February 3: HTDC, CPLY
February 11: MLNM,
February 12: CMD

The companies above had earnings growth of 50% to 300% last quarter, and their current quarter are projected to increase. VVUS and CNTO, the very volatile of the group can be easily played as a daytrade or two day hold BEFORE earnings come out. Although their growth is projected to have been in 3 digits last quarter, they are still iffy and any disappointment might have dire consequences. I would play them ANY day from tomorrow until earnings as they will move with the entire pharmaceutical sector and even better the closer the earnings date.

QTRN is a fine play. It is a Contract Research Organization, a firm that manages clinical trials for small biotech companies that lack the staff, experience, or money to manage their clinical trials internally. QTRN is the largest CRO and it took in more than 200 million in revenue in the third quarter of 1997.

ESCMF I've played for the past 4 quarters and it still has a 47% growth for the last quarter.

HDTC and CMD are not as risky as CNTO and VVUS yet both are projected to gain in the three digit range.

HDTC, CPLY, ESCMF are ranked in 90th percentile and above for insider buying.

CMD has just reached a new 52 week high on very high volume. It has a fundamental rank of 90 and an analyst rank of 98.
