You may have hit the nail on the noggin and answered a gnawing question that has plagued musicologists for years.. They have been eternally flummoxed as to why Flagstad insisted upon wearing a scuba mask onstage (and even occasionally in studio) for her Wagnerian roles. Whenever anyone would ask her about it she would become apoplectic and say nothing but make the venerable "gag" sign of sticking two fingers down her throat.
