Many slaveowners back in the Antebellum days would have said that they weren't racists. They loved their darkies--they had their white families and their black families. They were uplifting them from the barbarism that they lived in in Africa. If anything, they should be grateful for having been taken out of that darkness and brought into the light of the New World and Christianity.
