I posted from that McArdle piece partly because I don't think that point can be made often enough, partly because she has long been my favorite columnist (and, along with Greg Popovich, one of my favorite presidential write-ins), and partly because I really liked how she phrased the line I bolded.

In a system tilted toward representing geography rather than population density


A while back, when there was ongoing discussion of the electoral college(not to mention the Senate), I had a long, frustrating discussion with a friend about that. I don't recall how I expressed it. I think I may have said "acreage" rather than "geography." Regardless, I couldn't get him to recognize the concept let alone what was wrong with it. Maybe I'll give it another try at lunch today.

Also mentioned off and on throughout the existence of this thread by multiple posters including me, the notion that the D's will find a way to blow what should be an easy win. The above is one of the ways.
