I dig in leaves that I have collected the previous fall and chop and water over the summer so they is almost dirt, plus I line the bottoms of the planting trenches with well rotted manure, plus I crumble eggshells and spread them on the surface. It is amazing how the shells disappear overnight even without water. There are always lots of earthworms hanging out in the roots when I dig up the bulbs, which I am careful to remove and put back in the soil. Maybe they bury the eggshells in gratitude... I am pretty religious on the watering. I have been told it is best not to water garlic at all in the last few weeks before it is ready to dig up, but that is just not practical for me. I have been gradually moving the plantings closer together after checking out some friends who grow them much closer together than I used to. Like you I do not measure, but I would say that this year the rows were about 15 cm apart with 8-10 cm between the bulbs. I do plant the largest ones as I have been told, but maybe that is not necessary. I am also very religious about rotating the planting spot to avoid disease and pest. The bulbs you originally sent me brought some rust along, but that was gone after a few years without me using any disinfectant such as alcohol. The increase in shorts on SSL is interesting. My guess would be that is for hedging purposes. Since they passed $1B market cap, many more institutions, who tend to use that sort of strategy, have been able to buy shares. I am now trying to figure out if $1500 is a blowoff top for the PoG. Hope not. OK, time to make some pesto with garlic and basil from the garden. Wish I could grow the pecorino romano cheese and olive oil too... LC
