Jim, You wrote,

<Only during the latter years of their existence, when they begin to debase the gold content of their monetary units, do they lose power and prestige and fall to ruin.>

Unfortunatly the bulk of the ruin has been payed for by the poeple through ever increasing taxes. When you take a look at all the failures and the Gov. coming to the rescue you know who is paying.
Question is, who made money off of the failures? Was this not part of
the plan when gold was debased? I'm gonna sound like a broken record
by quoting Greenspans who stated;

This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists' tirades against
gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the `hidden'
confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious
process. It stands as a protector of property rights. If one grasps
this, one has no difficulty in understanding the statists' antagonism
toward the gold standard."
Alan Greenspan (1966)

Will we go back to the standard?

Jimm--great commentary.

<Maybe there is hope when our corrupt indignant leaders are finally being exposed.>

Boy oh boy, Slick Willy exposed himself again!
