Why Did God Save Hotaling's Whiskey ?

Anson Parson (A.P.) Hotaling built these two structures as headquarters for his whisky distillery. In the aftermath of San Francisco's Great Earthquake of 1906, fire and dynamite destroyed over 28 thousand buildings and an incalculable number of lives over a 4.7 square mile area. While everything around it was reduced to ashes this area, now called the Jackson Square Historic District, was saved.

Several clergymen asserted, after the disaster, that the catastrophe had been divine retribution visited upon the City for its wicked ways. But, thanks to the pluck, resolve and ingenuity of the A.P. Hotaling staff and the heroic efforts of a Navy Lieutenant named Frederick Newton and his men, this whiskey warehouse and surrounding buildings survived. Soon after famed poet and editor of Sunset Magazine, Charles Kellogg Field, penned these lines.....

"If, as they say, God spanked the town

For being over frisky,

Why did he burn the churches down

And save Hotaling's whiskey?"

God has an amazing artistic flair. Just when you begin to understand God's Universe you realize you haven't even begun to scratched the surface.
