They owned a lot of land and several businesses. However, while finishing up his degree, Castro took over Cuba and stole everything our family owned. It was for the people, they said, just like all the Democrats are saying now as they try to steal what others have earned. At that point, my father was destitute. He had only what he could earn for himself. My mother was also poor as dirt, but they were married, so they had each other. He then got a job and started to pay for our Cuban family to fly to the US and the lawyer fees to get their paperwork in order so they could stay and work here. Some of our family members were put in work camps for years and it took a lot to get them out. My Uncle's brother who owned land that was also stolen by Castro disappeared and was never seen again. Our family suspects he was shot for political dissent. Some of my family members never made it out. Most of them are dead now. Others are distant relatives and my father lost touch with them. From those humble beginnings, my father helped many of my family members become citizens. He built a successful business and made sure my brother and I worked from an early age and learned the value of a good education. Some of my family members that my father helped never rose from the most menial jobs imaginable, warehouse jobs, beautician jobs, and the like. But their sons and daughters did far better, because they believed in education. My father and my family were just blessed with three things: good brains, good work ethics, and a country that gave us the space and freedom to go as far as we wanted to go with our lives. We never took from this country and we never broke the laws of this country. We came her adhering to the law and gave respect to this country from Day 1. This country returned that respect and now we are where we are.
