dunno, seems to me Hong Kong has a lot of freedom and even with the current hiccup, compares favourably to most places, for one can easily see the situation elsewhere under similar circumstances deteriorating to looting and burning.

What the mrs tell me is, "you know, now the shopkeepers are just like during SARS, really courteous and helpful whereas before tends to be haughty or hard"

What another told me is what helpful demonstrators did to guide him and his wife out of a people jammed place and on the road to home.

I see the demonstrations on the HK streets as an expression of freedom, and the property-damaging and people-harming counter-actions an expression of rule-of-law. Anywhere else on the planet the shops would be looted and facilities burning.

I am still investigating the issues and ruminating over the implications. Shall tell once convinced.

We the boys celebrated the birthday of one of our own last night, and ate at a Macanese (Macau Portuguese, as opposed to the food-culture-less pure Portuguese fare :0) restaurant in Taipa village antoniomacau.com

We went to Macau by JetFoil, and could have returned by longest over-sea bridge but instead used our roundtrip tickets by boat. The Greater Bay Area (GBA) development initiative is shaping up to be just fantastic and kids who engage should do well.

RE <<repression ... >>

Unclear that the hksar government has so far repressed anyone, so far, except trying ineffectively to maintain law and order so that the population can do whatever they need to do to maintain a livelihood. So Hillary may be off base. Am sure the hksar government shall be able to maintain law and order, as did Singapore back when gaining independence circa 1947, and as did the British in Hong Kong during 1967 episode.

In the meantime, believe hksar civil servant Corp needs a house cleaning, to rid of ineffective managers, per directive of the Board of Directors.

But, not yet time. Must wait for call of duty by the people for the people against other people. It always comes down to by the people for the people against other people.

Hong Kong so far has been exemplary, but soon may devolve, evolve, and then getting on w/ more productive undertakings. No discussions can take place because no opposition leaders has had the courage to emerge, step forward, on the one hand, and be counted. OTOH, firstly the protestors recognize no single leadership, and secondly the rioters groups have no leaders, only dark hands. The police doing their work, investigating and readying. I hope there are no in-the-dark students unknowingly being manipulated.

So, perhaps the scenario is societal dialogue after dark-hands are ID-ed.

Our helpers said they have been alerted to refrain from accepting money showing up at protests, authorized or not, and the preferred sum seems to be 3k HKD for in the crowd march, and 7k HKD for front line work. The payments are in the form of fuss-free value-add cards good for transport fare and for convenience and grocery store purchases.

Let’s see what the police turn up, and if the evidence is safe / reliable.

The details surrounding the protests, and the riots, are not crystal clear except to ignorant folks and folks w/ agenda, as opposed to impartial observers. So, let us wait.
