I don't see too many people complaining about the actual hardware AOL uses. Everyone knows they just spent a slug of money on new equipment. The "out-dated BBS technology" has to do with the way that hardware is used, namely as a dialup content provider, a la Prodigy & CompuServe. In the emerging wide-bandwidth world of cable modems, perhaps ADSL, perhaps also some wireless, the AOL POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) model has few places to go long-term.
