Netscape Seen Moving to Give Browser Software Away for Free Mountain View, California, Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Netscape Communications Corp. said it will host a conference call tomorrow as analysts anticipate the company will move to give its World Wide Web browser software away for free. The Internet software company said it will hold a news conference call ''regarding its client software strategy'' at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Standard time. Netscape spokeswoman Rosanne Siino declined to elaborate on the topic of the call. The Mountain View, California-based company has considered giving its Navigator browser away for free for some time. Netscape said earlier this month that it lost $113 million to $117 million last year amid pressure from rival Microsoft Corp., which gives its Internet Explorer browser away. Netscape has seen its browser market share dwindle to as low as 58 percent from 73 percent at the end of 1996, according to market researcher Dataquest. The Navigator browser, used to view Web pages, currently sells for $49. ''It sounds like they're going to give Navigator away for free,'' said Rob Enderle, an analyst at Giga Information Group. Such a move would shore up its declining market share, he said. Analysts have said that if Netscape were to give the browser away, it could make up the lost revenue through sales of services, server software products and Web site advertising. ''It can stop those migrations'' to Internet Explorer, Enderle said. ''It should stop the losses. They can recover quite a bit (of market share) if they position this right.'' Netscape President and Chief Executive Jim Barksdale, Chief Financial Officer Peter Currie and Executive Vice President of Sales Mike Homer will be on the conference call. o~~~ O
