Strategic Inflection Point Dead Ahead?

According to Andrew Groves (Head of Intel) in his book "Only the Paranoid Survive", strategic inflection points are caused by a 10x (ten times) change in the environment affecting the way companies do business. I believe the internet and E-commerce is about to experience such a change.

Microsoft, Intel and Compaq are teaming with 4 of the 5 Baby Bells to put high spees Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) modems on the shelves by this Christmas. The DSL modems will work over existing copper phone lines and promise to be 30 times faster than the 28.8K modems currently in use.

This is exactly what the internet needed to become more fully functional. Shopping on the internet is a chore when it takes 60 seconds or more for an Eddie Bauer website with a lot of pictures to come up on your monitor. Faster modem speeds will allow denser graphics enrichment of websites without slowing loading times to a crawl. The web will become more attractive to vendors and customers alike.

This could spell toruble for AOL if they become a bottleneck in their customers acces to the internet. I put up will AOL now so I can read the IDX message board, but if my internet access speed is continues to be greatly impeded because of AOL's overtaxed servers, I may lighten their load. As the quality of "free" websites grow on the web, the attractiveness of AOL lessens. Also I hate getting all those junk ads on AOL. What do you think Wendell?

Anyways, things should be cooking by June of 1999 and if the internet doesn't melt down when the clock strikes midnight on 12/31/1999.
