I don't think I saw in mentioned in this thread, I read an article in Business Week that SGI is considering spinning off MIPS. They would do this with an IPO for a 20% interest in MIPS followed by a complete sale some time latter. They expect to raise $500 million from this. What they are going to do with $500 million, I don't know. I guess the thinking is that MIPS makes money selling chips for Nintendo but doesn't provide the high end chips that SGI needs. This leaves SGI free to build computers based on Intel or other chips. I can't see any downside to this except that as a developer for the SGI platform I'll have a new architecture to support.
