Normally that would be quite OK - unless you grabbed his Japanese girlfriend and he were a (local) Japanese. My wife is Japanese and lived in Honolulu for 7 years, where I met her. Her friends or rather the husbands of her Japanese friends, all flying for Pan Am and based there, never stopped to mention, that 'she met and married a haole!' All of that said with a big smile, though!
I have never heard the word 'Haole' used in any but friendly ways. You may IMHO have been mistaken and taken it seriously, because you just didn't know ...
