I linked the article, pre-paywall, in edited post.

I get the magazine, but prefer to read it in paper so haven’t activated online account.

In addition to describing Xi’s background in detail, the FA article posits much of what you can read here:

mironline.ca

Considering the ideological about-faces a top Chinese pol has to navigate, the internal political issues, and the dire consequences of a misstep, you couldn’t pay me enough to be in Xi’s shoes as he builds what increasingly looks like a totalitarian state.

My opinion, fwiw, is that he is not the right guy for China at this juncture.

Agree on your last point. Recent events suggest that no negotiations are likely to succeed unless the pain is intense, unbearable.

There is little doubt in my mind that China will do everything it can to influence 2020 elections. The paltry Russian effort in 2016 will look like a garden party. Every single Dem candidate is preferable to Trump because they are all more pliable, less assertive.

Interestingly, I am beginning to see a tiny bit of a suggestion from normally anti-Trump quarters that the US should unite behind Trump re China, regardless. The Atlantic, a stalwart anti-Trump magazine, for example had a recent opinion piece advocating the point. Although an opinion piece, I thought it amazing that it was even published.
