INFRASTRUCTURE Looks Ahead at the Semiconductor Manufacturing Industry in 1998

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1998--In two of its recent publications, INFRASTRUCTURE has commented on the fundamental strength that it sees in the semiconductor and semiconductor equipment markets despite current unsettled conditions in Asia.

Now, in the January issue of its monthly newsletter, the group looks at the 1998 outlook for the Semiconductor, Semiconductor Equipment and related industries.

"INFRASTRUCTURE" is a leading monthly newsletter for high-technology industry professionals, members of the financial community and private investors. Further discussion has been published in the "Daily Notes," a real-time e-mail subscriber research service which is included in the subscription service from this independent research and analyst group.

The January issue features an in-depth review of the presentations made at SEMI's ISS conference held earlier this month by industry and market leaders from companies such as Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC); Motorola (NYSE:MOT); Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN); and TSMC (NYSE:TSM). The issue also includes comments from the INFRASTRUCTURE staff on their outlook for 1998.

"While 1997 has been an extremely healthy year for semiconductor demand as measured in terms of IC units, there has been some significant price erosion," noted Ron Leckie, CEO, INFRASTRUCTURE. "However, this is the exact mechanism that has fueled the elastic semiconductor market for decades." He added, "The Test, Assembly and Packaging sectors are extremely sensitive to unit demand and these sectors continue to perform well."

The January issue also discusses technology developments which are driving re-tooling in the "back-end" sector, helping companies like Aetrium (Nasdaq:ATRM); Aseco (Nasdaq:ASEC); Cohu Inc. (Nasdaq:COHU); Credence Systems (Nasdaq:CMOS); Electroglas (Nasdaq:EGLS); Kulicke & Soffa (Nasdaq:KLIC); LTX Corp. (Nasdaq:LTXX); and Teradyne (NYSE:TER).

"1998 holds the prospects of bringing new technologies and materials to chip manufacturing to enable ongoing cost reduction through smaller feature sizes," noted Carl Johnson, President, INFRASTRUCTURE. He added, "Our goal is to keep a finger on the pulse of these developments as they are brought on line, and a careful study of these technological developments will help us capitalize on the right investment opportunities."

In a featured article in the January issue, Johnson reviews the technologies for Next Generation Lithography that are being developed by companies like ASM Lithography (Nasdaq:ASML); Cymer (Nasdaq:CYMI); DuPont (Nasdaq:DPMI); Etec Systems (Nasdaq:ETEC); Hitachi (NYSE:HIT); IBM (NYSE:IBM); Lucent (NYSE:LU); Photronics (Nasdaq:PLAB); Silicon Valley Group (Nasdaq:SVGI); and Ultratech Stepper (Nasdaq:UTEK).

The January issue of "INFRASTRUCTURE" is available upon signing up for an annual or month-to-month subscription. Electronic subscriptions cost $375 per annum or $35 per month and include industry acclaimed "Daily Notes" and access to back issues of "INFRASTRUCTURE," "Daily Notes" and Baseline Financial reports, all available at the INFRASTRUCTURE web site. Paper subscriptions cost $45 month-to-month or $475 annually and include "Daily Notes," Baseline Financial reports and back issue access only if subscribers have access to the world wide web.
