I've been burned by both. But stock prices very much CAN be affected by them. I've seen it happen. Perhaps it isn't as prevalent in the caliber of stocks you are used to trading, but I assure you in the BB stocks, the under 1.00 set, a lying short can kick the jams out from under a stock with just a few well placed words.
