Zorro...Below are some excerpts from an article in the Atlanta Constitution on Jan. 21. Remember that BellSouth purchased CAI Wireless (or was it CS Wireless) MMDS spectrum rights in the Atlanta area, and is planning a MMDS wireless Internet network in Atlanta some time in 1998....but, thay also have a big interest in ADSL, apparently. ********************************************************************** BellSouth plans web access beyond cable speed Digital lines: Computer giants reportedly helping set standard for super-fast phone modems.. By Michael E. Kanell "BellSouth plans to offer a new Internet service this spring that will transmit data at speeds up to 100 times faster than today's fastest modems....." "BellSouth reportedly is one of four regional Bells joining with computer giants Compaq, Intel and Microsoft in an alliance aimed at setting technical standards for the technology known as ADSL....." "Cable modems are potentially five times as fast as the speediest ADSL-----but they depend on installation of many millions of dollars worth of fiber optic lines between company and homes. ADSL's advantage is that it can run on the copper wires making up most of the nation's telephone network......" "BellSouth spokesman John Goldman said the company intends to launch ADSL in most large cities in its nine-state territory after the end of an ADSL trial in Birmingham. About 70 people are part of that trial, which is scheduled to end in May......." "BellSouth, which must install banks of ADSL devices in its own central offices, will leave others to sell the equipment (modems)to consumers and businesses. Primary modem supplier for the phone companies will be Belgium-based Alcatel, which will work closely with Hayes Corp. of Norcross, Georgia......" "Industry analysts say the modems will sell for $300 to $500, dropping in price as demand picks up. Dataquest and Telechoice predict that ADSL will have up to 3 million subscribers by 2000....." "GTE Corp. now offers ADSL in Marina del Rey, Calif., charging $250 for installation and $125 per month....." ********************************************************************** The plot thickens, and I wonder which technology will win out?
