Interesting item from this week's Electronic News:

BRING ON THE SOFT MODEMS--Intel is "definitely" planning to incorporate soft modem technology into its upcoming Merced microprocessor, expected to debut in 1999, according to one industry observer. This is a complete reversal of the company's earlier warning to avoid the technology in current systems. Software modems use MPU processing power instead of dedicated modem chips which can tax system resources, although current processors are said to be powerful enough to support modem demands. However, upcoming power management schemes which leave systems on at all times, but put the machines to sleep when unused, may not be able to wake up in time for a software-based modem to catch incoming fax calls. Intel seems to think it can solve those problems before Merced rolls out. Was the earlier warning from Intel a smokescreen?

They also have an interesting article about MMX2.
