Grim >> Samsung & Hyundai Merge

I did not post a link, because as I said in my post ".... the Korean press is not talking about the merger of the semiconductor divisions yet". However overnight they have picked-up on the story and I can now bring you the link!

koreatimes.co.kr

Hyundai Business Group's new co-chairman, MH Chung, it taking control of the talks (he was the main force behind the semiconductor division). Don't expect much more information for the next couple of weeks, as next week is New Year in Korea.

The combined revenue of the two companies would make it the number 3 worldwide for semiconductor after Intel & NEC (Micron is something like number 25-30) using DQ numbers. In DRAM the new company would have 30 percent marketshare!

The idea is that the debt is written off when the companies are merged, or Hyundai is declared bankrupt and then Samsung buys it for $1 creating a company with little debt. With restructuring it will have improved efficiencies, the best technology, and fab capacity to take on Micron.

Don't forget Micron's reckless behaviour in increasing output and being price leader over the last 18 months has made it many enemies in Korea and Japan - it will soon be payback time!
