The number of smoking related deaths in South Carolina is 380.1 per 100,000 population. Therefore, there are about 13,253 deaths per year in South Carolina related to smoking. But South Carolina's responsibility for this carnage goes far beyond its own state borders. South Carolina is the 4th largest tobacco producing state in the United States. South Carolina tobacco agriculture produced $172,000,000 in cash receipts in 1994 which is 6.5% of the total tobacco agriculture cash receipts in the United States in 1994.
